In addition to bringing new services to Amazon's cloud platform, VMware also announced several other new or expanded partnerships with companies, including Dell EMC, HP, Fujitsu, and the IT services firm DXC Technology. Being held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Convention Center in Las Vegas, VMworld runs from Aug. 27-31.
First announced in October, VMware Cloud on AWS is a hybrid offering designed to "give customers the full software-defined data center experience," according to VMware. It provides users with the ability to extend their on-premises VMware vSphere applications to private, public, and hybrid cloud environments supported with AWS services.
"VMware Cloud on AWS gives customers a seamlessly integrated hybrid cloud that delivers the same architecture, capabilities, and operational experience across both their vSphere-based on-premises environment and AWS," VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said today in a statement.
Among the capabilities VMware Cloud on AWS provides are support for workload portability between private and public clouds, flexibility in deciding where to run applications, and the ability to "spin up an entire VMware SDDC [software-defined data center] in under a couple hours."
VMware Cloud on AWS is available now in Amazon Web Services' West (Oregon) region, and is set to expand to other AWS locations around the world next year.
