Two Bigger-Screen iPhones Reported Coming in Sept.

If this is Wednesday, or any other day of the week for that matter, then it must be time for new rumors about the latest, greatest and largest Apple iPhone ever. Suppliers in China will begin mass production of two new iPhones next month, according to Bloomberg news service, which cited "people familiar with the plans."

A new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will be accompanied by a larger, phablet-ish iPhone with a 5.5-inch display -- both larger than the 4-inch displays on the iPhone 5S and 5C. Apple is "ramping up" on the two larger devices in the face of increased competition, Bloomberg reported.

Which Rumor to Believe

When it comes to the iPhone 6, the rumor mill seems to always be in overdrive. Just last month, the Taiwan-based Economic Daily News reported that, based on information from people with knowledge of what Apple intends to do, the new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would be released along with an iPhone with a 5.5- or 5.6-inch display -- just slightly larger than the 5.5-inch display Bloomberg's sources mentioned.

Then on Wednesday, a new report from Chinese Web portal Tencent, which cited unnamed sources, pegged the launch date for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 as Friday, Sept. 19. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom is said to be contacting customers and telling them that the iPhone 6 will launch on Sept. 19, and will be available on that date in Deutsche Telekom stores and also from Apple.

If the rumors prove true, which is likely, Apple will be playing follow the leader when it comes to smartphones with larger screen displays. The tech giant is readying for the launch of its new iPhones after rivals like Samsung and HTC released smartphones with displays that sport screens as large as 5.7 inches.
