T-Mobile Offers Users 4G LTE Mini Cell Towers

Ahead of its next big "Un-carrier" announcement, T-Mobile today unveiled what it's calling a personal cell tower for home and business users whose LTE coverage needs a boost. By connecting the T-Mobile 4G LTE CellSpot to their broadband Internet, users with limited signal coverage can improve both their voice and data coverage, T-Mobile said.

"This is totally next-gen advanced technology," President and CEO John Legere said in a video blog announcing the 4G LTE CellSpot. "This actually is a T-Mobile tower, just with low-power settings for personal and business use."

Starting Wednesday, Simple Choice customers can get each get a single 4G LTE CellSpot for their businesses or homes with a $25 returnable deposit. Legere said his company will have more product news to announce on November 10 with the launch of "Un-carrier 10."

Supports Up to 16 Calls at Once

The new 4G LTE CellSpot rounds out a family of CellSpot products that T-Mobile has been rolling out since last September. Other devices in the family include the Wi-Fi CellSpot Router for Wi-Fi-based calling and texting and the 4G LTE CellSpot Signal Booster for improving cellular signals in a home or business without an Internet connection.

Basically a small low-power wireless radio, or femtocell, the 4G LTE CellSpot provides 3G, 4G or 4G LTE coverage for any 3G or 4G LTE T-Mobile device in its range. T-Mobile said the device offers an average coverage are of 3,000 square feet and works wherever the company has wireless spectrum.

The 4G LTE CellSpot measures 8.5 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall and 1.3 inches thick. While it's described as a plug-and-play device, it takes up to two hours to establish its wireless connection once it's set up, T-Mobile said. Once it's up and running, the 4G LTE CellSpot can support up to 16...
