Storage-Starved Apple Users Get Some Help

Apple products are known for being somewhat stingy on things like storage space, to put it mildly. The iPhone 5c, for example, Apple's basic model, comes with just 8 gigabytes of capacity, not nearly enough space for users who want to use the phone to download music, record a high-definition video, or snap more than a few photos.

With the new iXpand drive, SanDisk is hoping to ease the storage restrictions for Apple users. The flash drive comes with both lightning and standard USB connectors, allowing it to connect both to iOS devices directly and to laptops and other non-Apple devices.

Expanded Storage for Videos, Photos

SanDisk is marketing the new drive as the answer to iPads and iPhones creaking under the weight of too much data.

"According to IDC, nearly three-quarters of all images are now captured on smartphones and tablets," said Dinesh Bahal, vice president of product marketing at SanDisk, in a news release announcing the iXpand drive.

"With this significant increase in mobile-generated content, consumers are looking for easy ways to manage it all. We created the iXpand Flash Drive to offer consumers a quick and safe way to move their favorite content between devices so it's available when and where they want it."

The drive, which comes in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB capacities, also comes with a flexible connector to allow users to attach it directly to their iPhone or iPad without removing their device from a protective case. Since the drive connects directly to iOS devices via a Lightning connector, no other connecting cable is needed. The collapsible drive is encased in a metal shell for increased durability, SanDisk said.
