Should You Upgrade Now to Apple’s iOS 8?

To download or not to download? That is the question some iPhone users are asking as we wait for the next models to roll out.

Why the question? Why wouldn't anyone rush to download Apple's latest mobile operating system with all its cool bells and whistles? Some older Apple device users may be concerned about it slowing down the experience. Others may not want to upgrade many of their existing iOS 7 apps for the new version.

We caught up with Roger Entner, principal analyst at Recon Analytics, to get his take on the iOS 8 download question. He told us Apple has a strong history of delivering clean software product upgrades and he sees no reason for most existing iPhone users to wait another day to download the new software. The key word here is "most."

One Reason to Wait

"There is one reason why some people might be a little bit nervous about downloading iOS 8 today. When iOS 7 came out people who downloaded it on older devices found their iPhones became very sluggish," Entner said.

"So if you have an iPhone 5 or 5S I think it's a no-brainer to go ahead and download iOS 8. With the 4S I might wait, considering the experiences we had with 7."

Of course, iOS 8 will come pre-installed on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus models, which posted a sales record in the first 24 hours of its availability. The iPhone 6 topped 4 million pre-order sales on its debut day. The new iOS 8 is one of the phone's compelling features.
