Samsung Portable SSD T1: Super Fast, Super Pricey

Samsung Electronics is turning heads with its new solid state drive (SSD). The Portable SSD T1 aims to set the bar for the modern digital consumer. Samsung is billing the SSD T1 as ideal for three target audiences: business travelers, creative professionals and content creators that need secure local storage they can take anywhere they go and tap to transfer large amounts of data.

The portable SSD is certainly stylish and packs plenty of power. ItEUs available in 250 GB, 500GB and 1 terabyte (TB) storage capacities and rolls out in the United States as well as 14 countries across the European and Asian markets in late January.

Does it really? Samsung is meeting with positive reviews on the SSD T1, which is powered by its proprietary 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology. The SSD T1 was chosen as an honoree for the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show Innovation Awards.

The drive has sequential read/write speeds of up to 450 megabytes per second with a USB 3.0 super speed interface and random read/write speeds of up to 8,000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) and 21,000 IOPS, respectively. That qualifies as fast and then some. The write speed is up to 100 times faster than an external hard disk drive (HDD).
