Samsung Launches Age of 6 GB RAM Smartphones

A new type of RAM developed by Samsung may soon pave the way for mobile devices with up to 6 GB of memory. That opens the door to high-end smartphone models that could have more RAM than some lower end laptops. Tablets equipped with the new memory chips would be capable of functioning essentially like full-fledged laptops.

To give a sense of scale, the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are each equipped with only a single gigabyte of RAM. With 6 GB, users will be able to enjoy true multi-tasking, browse multiple tabs at once, and enjoy the maximum performance from the operating systems of their devices. The company said it has already started mass-producing the new chips.

More Efficient, More Reliable

The development comes courtesy of SamsungEUs new, 20-nanometer process technology, which the company used to build the first 12-gigabit low power, double data rate (LPDDR4) DRAM memory chip for mobile devices. According to the company, the 12 Gb LPDDR4 (pictured) brings the largest capacity and highest speed ever available for a DRAM chip. Samsung said the new chip also provides improved energy efficiency and reliability for consumers, while making it easier for OEMs to design devices for it.

And the chips arenEUt just fast for smartphones. According to the company, the new version is more than 30 percent faster than the existing 20nm-based 8 Gb LPDDR4, while consuming 20 percent less energy. That would be enviable even for DD4 DRAM found in a PC.

EUBy initiating mass production of 12 Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM in an extremely timely manner, we now are not only helping OEMs to accelerate their moves to the next generation of mobile devices, but also providing functionality that will give mobile consumers greatly enhanced user experiences,EU said Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president...
