OnePlus 5 Smartphone Set To Make Its Debut on June 20

The latest flagship smartphone from China-based OnePlus, the OnePlus 5, will make its global online debut on June 20. The company also plans to hold several so-called pop-up events in different cities, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, New York, and Paris, at the same time.

Separate launch events in China and India are scheduled for June 21 and 22, respectively. While OnePlus isn't providing many official details about its new device, a leaked image verified as authentic by Android Police shows a sleek black device that many say resembles an Apple iPhone. The company has previously revealed that the OnePlus 5 will feature the Snapdragon 835, Qualcomm's new 10-nanometer system on chip.

The OnePlus 5, being promoted with the slogan "Focus on What Matters," is the successor to the OnePlus 3 (pictured above), which was launched last June. There will be no OnePlus 4, as the number four, which sounds like the word "death" in Chinese, is considered unlucky.

New Partnership for Improved Camera

Based on the image it obtained, Android Police noted yesterday that the OnePlus 5 appears to feature a dual camera array and "what appears to be OnePlus's trademark mute switch." OnePlus announced last month that it was partnering with the DxOMark image quality rating site to enhance the photographic capabilities of its next flagship phone.

"OnePlus' cameras have been improving with each new flagship product we've released," digital marketing staff member Diego Heinz wrote on the OnePlus user forum on May 18. "There's always more to be done to give you the ability to take clearer, more beautiful photos. Sometimes finding the right partner is one of the quickest ways to take things to the next level. Working alongside DxO, we're confident the OnePlus 5 will be capable of capturing some of the clearest photos around."
