Apple’s iPhone Continues Its Domination in US

Samsung makes a lot of headlines for its market share in global markets. But it turns out Apple still reigns supreme in the smartphone wars stateside -- and by a healthy margin.

According to the latest comScore MobiLens and Mobile Metrix, which reports key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry, in October, Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer with 40.6 percent OEM market share.

We turned to Roger Entner, principal analyst at Recon Analytics, to get his thoughts on the Apple victory. He told us the numbers do not surprise him.

"We see now the full effect of the new iPhone 5S and 5C on the market," he said. "Apple came to market with its new devices later than Samsung did, so we're seeing the full onslaught of the new Apple phones. The fourth quarter is usually the strongest quarter for smartphone sales, so it should get even better for iPhone."

150 Million Smartphone Owners

comScore reports that 149.2 million people in the U.S. own smartphones. That calculates to a 62.5 percent mobile market penetration during the three months ending in October -- and up 4.1 percent since July.

Again, Apple ranked as the top OEM with 40.6 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers, up 0.2 percentage points from July. Samsung ranked second with 25.4 percent market share, up 1.3 percentage points. Motorola made the leap to third with 7 percent, up 0.1 percentage points. Finally, HTC and LG followed with 6.7 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.

Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in October with 52.2 percent market share (up 0.4 percentage points), followed by Apple with 40.6 percent (up 0.2 percentage points), BlackBerry with 3.6 percent, Microsoft with 3.2 percent (up 0.2 percentage points) and Symbian with 0.2 percent.
